What "Clueless" Taught Me

I first watched Clueless when I was 10 years old, and let me tell ya, as the youngest of three brothers and three sisters, and as a girl who grew up on the East Coast, I was in awe of what I had watched. Who were these pretty girls, and where did they get their pretty clothing? Is that what California in the 90s was like? I wanted to go to a house party in… the Valley, is that what it's called? And what the hell is Suck and Blow?

It's been 10 years since I first watched that movie, and I fondly look back at Clueless as the movie that stimulated my sense of style. I also give Clueless credit for giving me the motivation to pursue fashion as a career. There have been countless times where I was having a bad day, so I would turn on my old VCR and watch Clueless again and again. Each time I watched that movie, I took something new away from it. So what have I learned from Clueless?

1) Plaid miniskirts are always appropriate. Any time. Anywhere.

(seriously though, this movie stimulated my love for plaid miniskirts)

2) When it comes to wooing your love, you should never be afraid to fall back on love letters and roses.

(can we just talk about those hats please?)

3) Don't try too hard to impress a guy that you're interested in. Just be yourself! And if worse comes to worse, he'll just turn out to be gay. It's not a big deal.

4) Oh yeah, and when it comes to finding the love of your life, sometimes you have to ignore your dumbass friends and see that he's been right in front of you all along.

(no offense to Cher or Dionne)

5) You know, it's not a bad thing to realize that you don't know what you're doing. Just think things over, and soon, the solution will come to you!

6) Overall, appreciate the people that you have in your life. And don't be afraid to loosen up control and let them make their own choices!

7) Oh yeah, and Paul Rudd doesn't age.

I mean, seriously.

Is Peplum Here to Stay?

Spring wasn't the only thing that sprung in 2012 – peplum sprung along with it. The trend was being worn everywhere from left to right; even popular celebrities like Emma Stone, Emma Watson, and Beyonce were wearing it! It turns out, however, that peplum was not something that had just been invented. In fact, peplum has been around since the 1940s. It was especially popular in that decade, mainly on knee-length dresses (then again, women wore a lot of dresses during that decade). Here, have a look:

Peplum also showed up again in the 80s, back when leg warmers, leggings, and big hair were all the craze. Check it out:

Finally, peplum showed up again in 2012, on celebrities and runways everywhere. And now, it is 2014, two years since the trend made a comeback. And you wanna know something? I still see peplum everywhere.

I was breezing through the clearance section of an Anthropologie the other day, and I saw that a majority of their floral shirts were peplum. I also saw some peplum tops and skirts in quite a few chain stores, like Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. I have even noticed peplum still making its way onto red carpets, worn by celebrities such as Kathy Griffin and Jennifer Lawrence. All of this peplum overload is making me wonder... is peplum here to stay?

I mean, I don't see why not. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about peplum, not even once. It must be because these carefully assorted ruffles on shirts and dresses are very figure flattering for many body shapes. It draws the right amount of attention to the waist, and then it gently flares out towards the bottom. It's perfect, especially if you have a patch of tum that you don't want everybody to see.

So I definitely will not mind if peplum makes its way from a spring/summer trend to a spring/summer staple. I say, bring on the peplum! The more, the springier.  Happy summer.
